This early-stage research into the ASCM sector revealed useful learnings, including:
• Building trust with miners was vital for gathering genuine information. Miners were open to collaboration but also sought solutions to their challenges. Local partnerships were key to managing expectations and accessing insights.
• Lesser-known actors were found to play a significant role in ASCM activities, such as local traders, transport agencies, and farming communities, providing a more comprehensive view of the value chain.
• Whilst the focus was on southern Peru, ASCM activity also occurs in northern regions – highlighting the need for further research.
• Findings were welcomed by national and international stakeholders as a starting point for exploring ASCM issues – including the Peruvian government, think tanks, universities, civil society groups, and large mining companies. Presenting at the OECD Forum for Responsible Mineral Supply Chains sparked interest, demonstrating the potential for global collaboration.
